Big Beach Boutique 4 – Flu Not Included

Fatboy Slim is looking to throw a fourth Big Beach Boutique bash in September. Subject to knocking heads with the council, two shows will host 22,000 people a night on Madeira Drive on September 26th and 27th. Norm is hoping the autumn date will negate a repeat of the 15 electric shocks he received during 2007’s new year gig. It is not yet known whether tickets, as before, will only be made available to those with a BN postcode. Incidentally, despite getting the flu and all the equipment breaking, support DJ David Guetta told us that it was one the best gigs of his life.

SOURCE Cover stars Voted Bands Of 2008

Congratulations to our former cover stars Foals and Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, who have both been named one of the acts of 2008 by almost every publication going. NME gave Foals the cover of their New Bands issue (JL&TJJJ also made the cut) but most excitingly, both made the normally on-point critics poll on the BBC website. Of course for all SOURCE readers they were the bands of 2007. You saw them – as always – here first.

Animate Your Vote

The Sallis Benney Theatre is acting as Brighton’s host venue for this year’s British Animation Awards screenings. Three programmes of short films, music videos and animated commercials will be shown on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th, with voting slips handed out at the same time. The votes will then be combined with others from around the UK to pick the winners. Get down there and support local filmmakers Trevor Hardy and David Anderson.
21 Today, 21 Today, They’ve Got The Key To The Concorde…
Concorde 2 is kicking off its 21st birthday celebrations this month with a host of themed offers. At advertised live shows, there will be 21 minutes when punters will be able to get two drinks for the price of one. Clubbers (again at selected nights) will get a free drink if they’re one of the first 21 customers, and if they’re the same age as the venue, will receive a C2 goodie bag. Mailing list subscribers will be treated to two-for-one offers all year too.

The Ocean Rooms’ Refit
Loads going on at the Ocean Rooms – soundsystem fixed, complete redecoration and a proper live lounge in the middle floor. The venue welcomes alt-dance night Somewhere In The Universe There Must Be Something Better Than Man (housewarming Friday 8th) and a new residency from Zombies Ate My Brain (Saturday 9th).

Burnt Toast
The old Polar Bar is looking lavish, and this night’s loose music policy promises to include “occasional nonsense”. Every Saturday at the Thomas Kemp, 9pm-1am.

Club Kovak
Doll & The Kicks join Kovak tonight, with LillyZoot on the decks. Hector’s House, Saturday March 1st, 8pm.

Kick Out the jams
Sal & co make a surprise return to the Pav Tav after their swift exit to the Barfly. That’s all forgotten as Fridays rock again.

Where’s It At?
Tru Thoughts’ Rob Luis and TM Juke are starting their monthly secret party on Thursday 7th. The venue will be announced on www.tru-thoughts.co.uk on the 1st of each month.

The White Rabbit
Formerly The Kensington, this independent boozer has now been revitalized to reflect “the independent, quirky spirit of this avant-garde, bohemian hot spot.”

Brighton Bands Not That Cool Shock

Well, we have to say that we could have done a lot better as a town, but Brighton has made two showings in the NME Cool List. Straight in at No.37 is the charming Joe Lean of Jing Jang Jong-fame (pictured), while Foals’ Yannis makes his debut at No.45. Knowing how much he hates the concept of ‘cool’ we’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he found out he was the top 50. Obviously we gave both of Foals and JL&JJJ their first front covers. In case you didn’t know, tattooed screamer Frank Carter from Gallows won, with friend of SOURCE Jamie Klaxon’s in second place.

Bloc Party

Local large-scale party gurus Bloc are doing another of their massive weekenders on 14th-16th March 2008. Yeah, it’s in 6 months, 200 miles away in Gt Yarmouth and we’ve got no line up information yet but it’s going to be one of the parties of the year and Brighton would be a lesser place with the Blocsters, so check out their website for regular updates.
