SOURCE Cover stars Voted Bands Of 2008

Congratulations to our former cover stars Foals and Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, who have both been named one of the acts of 2008 by almost every publication going. NME gave Foals the cover of their New Bands issue (JL&TJJJ also made the cut) but most excitingly, both made the normally on-point critics poll on the BBC website. Of course for all SOURCE readers they were the bands of 2007. You saw them – as always – here first.

Brighton Bands Not That Cool Shock

Well, we have to say that we could have done a lot better as a town, but Brighton has made two showings in the NME Cool List. Straight in at No.37 is the charming Joe Lean of Jing Jang Jong-fame (pictured), while Foals’ Yannis makes his debut at No.45. Knowing how much he hates the concept of ‘cool’ we’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he found out he was the top 50. Obviously we gave both of Foals and JL&JJJ their first front covers. In case you didn’t know, tattooed screamer Frank Carter from Gallows won, with friend of SOURCE Jamie Klaxon’s in second place.

Horse Dentistry

According to the NME, Foals played a house party so rammed that guitarist Jimmy was knocked over and smashed his tooth. Eighty excitable fans bundled into a little terrace house after the band's Cambridge gig and went as wild as you’d expect. Poor old Jimmy paid the price though – Yannis had to drive him to an emergency dental practice.

We had to rush off after the brilliant Foals gig last week but if anyone knows if they did a house party set afterwards – as they often do – please tell us about it in the comments section. We do know that, a couple of days before, their mates Maths Class annoyed their neighbours by playing at their own house party. Guitarist Andy says it was so packed that the band could only play “Foals style disco riffs” cos they couldn’t move. We were gutted we missed it.

Foals in E4 skin flick

E4 show Skins films a 10-minute Myspace-only special in Brighton early this month, for broadcast on Fri 17th. And they’ve hired Foals to play at the featured “secret party”, turning an otherwise cliquey TV idiots’ bash into something really worth checking out (erm, i quite like Skins - Ed).
