Not For Resale LIVE!, the late night monthly live band club night brought to you by our very own New Bands Editor Meatbreak will be moving from its home at The Greenhouse Effect to take up residence at The Hope on Queens Road from Friday 9th May.

The move comes ready for the night's 1st birthday, so expect a very special celebration to mark this simultaneous occasion.

Entry to the night will still be free, giving you the chance to witness the most interesting, exciting bands from Brighton (with the occasional appearance from someone from further afield) for nothing. Plus, resident DJs Meatbreak and Fokka Wolfe play until 2am, spinning their unique selection of future dance music.

Supercharged’s Lloyd Seymour, also known as Skool Of Thought, has left Brighton for the sunnier climes of Australia. Who can blame him, breaks is massive over there, with his mate Krafty Kuts the biggest DJ in the whole country. But don’t worry, the best midweek breaks night in the UK (the world?) isn’t leaving with him. There’ll be Brits looking after this end of the business, so expect the usual Thursday hangovers. Good luck Lloyd.

“I'm looking to share the room again with the right person/people,” he tells us. “This has always worked very well in the past. I’m away most of the time but the room is large enough to accommodate many people and has a great feeling. The Fortune Of War has just previewed a live music night. Drookit Dogs and Rubylux are planned alongside solo artists like Darius Alexander and Derek Meins, who used to entertain punters at manager Rob Sheppard’s old pub, The Mash Tun. It’s all part of a big change at the Fortune that has seen a move from the electronica that has been a part of the venue for many years. Elsewhere, You Dance I’ll Clap and the All Time Top 100 will entertain every Saturday and Friday night respectively.

Brighton Clubland Institution Calls It A Day

Wow, it really is the end of an era then. It’s official — Stompa Phunk has called it a day, in terms of weekly club nights anyway. The underground house night is ending a more than ten year run with a final party that brings together some of the key players at the night: Deepgroove and Orbital/Long Range’s Phil Hartnoll alongside long time residents David Parr and Tula. It takes place on Friday 14th March.

Everyone will have their memories of favourite nights — normally massive stars like Derrick Carter or Josh Wink playing in venues smaller than the cloakrooms of the clubs they typically played in. Our fave memory is the time that Ralph Lawson brought the 2020 Vision crew down to squeeze in 45 minutes sets for his wife’s birthday. All was going well until the after-party where Luke Solomon fell asleep in the middle of the room with a box on his head, while Ralph and Carl Finlow did the washing up and cleaned the whole kitchen for fun.

Stompa Phunk promise some one-offs in the future, but until then we’ll leave you with a list of some of the DJs they blagged to come down.

With a music policy that demands you to play the best records whatever the genre, All Time Top 100 is a breath of fresh air in a world that has DJs on a treadmill of newness. It disappeared at the end of last year when the Cosmo Bar was shut, so it’s great to hear that it’s back at the charmingly salty-sea-dog outpost The Fortune Of War. Every Friday from March 7th you can hear the cream of Brighton tastemakers playing obscurities and old favourites all the way until 2am. Also look out for one of their famous all-dayers at The Cobbler's Thumb on Sun 23rd March and the 5th Birthday Party at Audio on Sunday 4th May.

A Life of Crime

Brighton City Reads 2008 celebrates crime writer Val McDermid’s A Place of Execution from 13 March until 23 May, the idea being that if everyone reads the same book, it brings people together. Events include a free film screening of Wire in the Blood on Saturday 5 April at 10am, free library readings and discussions at the library throughout April, a Crime Walk on Thursday 17 April at 7.30pm and a Crime Book Quiz at the Lord Nelson on Wednesday 23 April. Handmade CDs from the Woods

The Oxfam Field Recordings Volume 2 comp is finally ready. Brighton’s great Great Escape festival just keeps growing as more names are added to the line-up. Held on 15th–17th May, bands confirmed already include Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, The Hold Steady, Black Lips, Iron & Wine, The Subways and many more. With a focus on finding new talent, the Great Escape is known for breaking bands from all over and is already plugging unsigned acts Ebony Bones and White Lies. Loop Loops The Loop

Loop Festival was a victim of its own success last year with people bursting out of their tents, but the organisers say they have been doing a lot of talking with the council and its return will see bigger structures and two open stage areas across the town centre site. “We really want to get that word out that, after the success of last year we have taken measures to make sure that everyone can get see all the acts they want to,” says organiser Jason Clarke, who is looking for new and local talent to perform at this year’s event. USA Craves Rock

Brighton band The Crave are set the play to an audience of 250,000 in the States later this year alongside Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and the Foo Fighters. The only unsigned band on the line-up of the massive Harley Davidson 105th Anniversary gig, they’ve already headlined the BBC America’s Brit Bus Tour and are planning a five-month tour. Citing the likes of Guns ‘N’ Roses and Green Day as their influences, the Crave were invited backstage to party with the Killers in Denver and had studio time with Mark ‘Sonic Youth/U2’ Flannery. Brighton-based video games publisher NCsoft is looking to recruit six apprentices from local students in 2008. Last year they worked with City College, PartnerTrans and SkillSet to train three Brighton-based students in Quality Assurance and Games Production. The apprentices will not only work on developing new PS3 and PC games but will have an impact on their final design. Rocket Fuels Up

The third Rocket Festival is set to take off from the beautiful Spanish mountains of Andalucia on 16th–18th May, and they’re looking for artists and arts organisations keen to go with them. With a strong emphasis on the visual arts and performance, circus, street and music they’d love to hear from anyone who can deliver arts-based workshops as well as outdoor and venue-based work for the many festival bars and arenas. New live music venue Coalition is due to replace The Beach on 20th March. Kitted out by the same crew who set up Wembley Stadium, the 700 capacity venue will have a sloped floor for shorter music fans, plus space for lounging and dining. ENCHANTED UNDER THE SEA
New burlesque favoured night Enchanted Under the Sea is back, Back To The Future style, on Friday 14th at the Hanbury Club. Live acts include Baby Bones and Kitty Peels, covering everything from 50s rock’n’roll, 60s garage and swing.

One of our fave bars will become a 200 capacity venue mid-March. Perfect, it looks like CBGBs already. We’ll keep you posted.

After just missing out on the Mercury prize, Bat For Lashes gets another chance for a fancy doorstop this month as she’s been nominated for two Brit Awards. Wolf-loving Natasha Khan will face competition from the likes of Kate Nash and PJ Harvey in the Best British Female category, and lines up against popsters Mika and Leona Lewis for the – eek – Radio 1 listener-voted British Breakthrough Act prize. Despite expectations to the contrary Belle & Sebastian blagged their way to the gong and relative outsiders The Fratellis also won, although they’re admittedly shit. You can shout your BRIT frustrations at the TV when it’s broadcast live on Wednesday 20th. Good luck Natasha.

Big Beach Boutique 4 – Flu Not Included

Fatboy Slim is looking to throw a fourth Big Beach Boutique bash in September. Subject to knocking heads with the council, two shows will host 22,000 people a night on Madeira Drive on September 26th and 27th. Norm is hoping the autumn date will negate a repeat of the 15 electric shocks he received during 2007’s new year gig. It is not yet known whether tickets, as before, will only be made available to those with a BN postcode. Incidentally, despite getting the flu and all the equipment breaking, support DJ David Guetta told us that it was one the best gigs of his life.

The Sallis Benney Theatre is acting as Brighton’s host venue for this year’s British Animation Awards screenings. Three programmes of short films, music videos and animated commercials will be shown on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th, with voting slips handed out at the same time. The votes will then be combined with others from around the UK to pick the winners. Get down there and support local filmmakers Trevor Hardy and David Anderson.
21 Today, 21 Today, They’ve Got The Key To The Concorde…
Concorde 2 is kicking off its 21st birthday celebrations this month with a host of themed offers. At advertised live shows, there will be 21 minutes when punters will be able to get two drinks for the price of one. Clubbers (again at selected nights) will get a free drink if they’re one of the first 21 customers, and if they’re the same age as the venue, will receive a C2 goodie bag. Brighton Bands Not That Cool Shock

Well, we have to say that we could have done a lot better as a town, but Brighton has made two showings in the NME Cool List. Straight in at No.37 is the charming Joe Lean of Jing Jang Jong-fame (pictured), while Foals’ Yannis makes his debut at No.45. Knowing how much he hates the concept of ‘cool’ we’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he found out he was the top 50. Obviously we gave both of Foals and JL&JJJ their first front covers. In case you didn’t know, tattooed screamer Frank Carter from Gallows won, with friend of SOURCE Jamie Klaxon’s in second place.

Dirty Cakes Make Mincemeat Of Reality TV

Another hearty cheer for local underground diva Stuart Flynn and his Dirty Cakes trio, who survived – nay, conquered – the evil world of reality TV last month, after hooking up a Peckham grime band on Singing With The Enemy. They collaborated on what was claimed to be the first ever hip hop track in 7/8 time. However the best bit of all was seeing iconic Pipettes guru Monster Bobby vox-popped outside a London club, captioned merely as “Dirty Cakes fan”. Plus Lauren Laverne did the voiceover. Loved it.

Crusoe’s A Hit In The Bedroom

Applause for local acid-jazz bedroom boffin Crusoe Weston who, at the scarily youthful age of 16, topped Amazingtunes’ worldwide download chart a couple of weeks back, with his homemade track Soulful Swing. Weston (who is also a member of Carnival Collective) chucked some songs online a few months back but was taken completely by surprise when over 20,000 people downloaded his song. Nice work.

Dragon’s Den: The Triumph And The Tears

We have two Dragon’s Den stories for you this month, with good and bad news. Last month’s In Conversation With star Sarah Lu has triumphed, scoring her full whack (£35k, although she had to give away 45%) for the YooDoo dolls from an impressed Deborah Meaden, who won a Dragon bidding war. She now has an unparallelled opportunity to roll out her brilliant YouDoo dolls customised toy business nationwide. Way to go Sarah! Does this mean the doll we’ve got with editor Kendall’s face on will be worth a mint in 20 years? We especially loved the bit where they said “So you dressed up for us?” and she replied “This is how I dress!”. In sadder news, the Dragons gave Brighton’s tuk tuks short shrift, calling them “novelty rides”. Hopefully that has nothing to do with their vanishing from our streets this autumn.

Kooks In The Studio For Second Album

The Kooks went back into the studio on Monday to start work on their second album, promising a more slightly experimental edge than ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ but with the same high tempo sound. The band have almost 100 songs to choose from and want to whittle them down quickly as they are bored of the current music scene.

“There’s a lot of shit out there,” singer Luke Pritchard told the NME, “especially over the last six months. So once we’re back hopefully we’ll fill that gap. I want the album to be big. I’ve got an ego. I want out singles to come out on the radio and for people to have their heads blown off by them.”

He went on to say that the new LP will have the same vibe as the last and that the songs that made the live set (‘Do You Want To Make Love To Me’, ‘Sway’, ‘See The Sun’ and ‘Hard To Bear’) were favourite to make the cut. It's due this February.

According to the NME, Foals played a house party so rammed that guitarist Jimmy was knocked over and smashed his tooth. Eighty excitable fans bundled into a little terrace house after the band's Cambridge gig and went as wild as you’d expect. Poor old Jimmy paid the price though – Yannis had to drive him to an emergency dental practice.

We had to rush off after the brilliant Foals gig last week but if anyone knows if they did a house party set afterwards – as they often do – please tell us about it in the comments section. We do know that, a couple of days before, their mates Maths Class annoyed their neighbours by playing at their own house party. Guitarist Andy says it was so packed that the band could only play “Foals style disco riffs” cos they couldn’t move. We were gutted we missed it.

Do You Like British Sea Power?

It seems like ages since the last British Sea Power album, and we’ll have to wait until 2008 until the next one. Luckily only ‘til 14th January when ‘Do You Like Rock Music?’ appears. The band have been working with a trio of interesting production names – ex-Arcade Fire drummer Howard Bilerman and Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Efrim Menuck, as well as Jarvis Cocker’s knob-twiddler Graham Sutton.

"Our first album was a bit wild and not to be listened to while riding a bike,” explains BSP guitarist Noble cryptically. “The second you could play all the way through without falling off. This one is car or a tank – a wind-powered car or tank, but still faster than all the other cars or tanks".

Erm, right.

In the meantime there’s a tour. The gig at Whitecliffs Café in Saltdean sounds interesting. Is it a real café, does anyone know?

Pipettes Dance The US Immigration Polka

Congratulations to The Pipettes, who’s great-fun debut album ‘We Are The Pipettes’ is released in America today. Unfortunately the supporting tour has just been cancelled after the US authorities refused them entry to the country. Miserable swines. The band hope to return later this month.

Meanwhile, did we spot Rose Pipette stood on a chair for the debut gig from our occasional listings girl’s We Are Snazzy ? OK, so Rose was there for her boyfriend’s band Restless List rather than her namesake, but can’t Brighton Live be so glamorous?!

Until Escape in "small scale riot" at Brighton Live

Apparently there was a “small-scale riot” at Brighton Live last week when Until Escape fans clashed with bouncers at the Engine Room. We’ll be looking into in more, but at the moment here are the two viewpoints as quoted in The Argus. Guitarist Mark Wyss puts the band’s side of the story: “We were starting our last song and invited the crowd onto the stage for it, which we usually do. But there was a doorman at the front of the stage who was physically preventing anyone from coming up. As more and more people tried to get on stage the whole situation got heated.”

The trouble seemed to head outside the venue but a video by the band doesn’t make it clear whether the escalation heads to mere shouting or more than that. The police say no crimes took place.

Neil Campbell, manager of Engine Rooms, saw it differently to the band, claiming that it was a publicity stunt staged by Until Escape: “They looked pretty pleased when they left and apologised for what had happened. They specifically asked for a bouncer to be put at the front of the stage and for them not to allow anyone on. Then during the act they encouraged people to come up.”

The inaugral Brighton City Festival launches this month, on Thurs 25th, further cementing our li’l town’s place as the true heart of the mini-fest. A “one-ticket multi-club” set-up sees the likes of Soulwax/2ManyDJs, Westwood, Laurent Garnier, Underground Resistance, Roll Deep, DJ Hype, Grooverider, Mampi Swift and many others all descend upon Brighton for a night of mayhem, using the Great Escape and Brighton Live blueprints of spreading festival stages across 14 of the town’s best-known venues. Over 100 acts will cover every shade of clubbing – there are even DJ sets from indie bands including Babyshambles, Futureheads and Belle & Sebastian. The event runs from 9pm-4am with Ocean Rooms, Digital, Tru, The Beach and The Arc all taking part. Best of all, they’re all within about five minutes’ walk of each-other. Oceana (formerly the Event II) unveils their shiny new £6million nightclub. Doors open to the public on Thurs 11th and the venue will run three spaces under one roof. The bar will be named The Deep Bar, while there will be two separate clubs – Reykyavik Icehouse and New York Disco. Individual bar names include Aspen Ski Lodge and Parisien Boudoir! It’s certainly a lot more interesting than the meat market it used to be. They’re also boasting some smaller reception bars and VIP spaces. Intriguingly, New York Disco is aimed at older clubbers and will even operate an over-23s only policy on the weekend.

Team was apparently shocked and dismayed to be asked to do production work on Craig David’s new material. Parton is so edgy and underground, he did an exclusive interview with the Daily Star to register his disappointment. Talk about kicking a boy when he’s down!

Local alt-rockers Drookit Dogs sure caught our attention with their latest stunt. Tom and the two Matts have all moved into one of those crazy houses full of cameras, where everything goes out live on the web – and they’ll be there for three months! More normally occupied by groups of half naked American sorority girls, the Dogs’ “Rockpad” (!!) will allow us to watch live as they develop their music, rehearse, record songs and generally whore themselves out for a possible record deal. Even when they do gigs, they won’t escape, as they’ll take their own cameras and film all that happens. Described as the “subject of the world’s first 24/7 online TV”, the band has been living in the house for about three weeks now, so it’s worth visiting them online, just to check if they’ve fucked, killed and/or eaten each-other yet.

Dim The Lights For Oska Bright

Oska Bright is the only film festival in Europe dedicated to screening work by learning disabled film-makers. Their third annual bash takes place on Mon 15th and Tues 16th at the Old Market, presented by Carousel, working with JunkTV and Mencap. Funding also came from Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s Baby Cow (that’s a production company, not an actual baby cow). Anyway, we love Oska Bright – when you look at the work, the film-makers’ “disabilities” cease to matter. Over the first two fests, they showed 100 films to over 8,000 people and this one is the largest yet, with contributors including Heart’n’Soul in London, Coventry’s Shyster Shadows and The Phoenix Centre in Newbury – but SOURCE will be keeping a look out for quality local work. This year, Carousel will tour a selection of winning films around the UK, visiting fifteen cities. Tickets are free but book in advance.

Pride Hit By “Bootleg”

This summer’s Pride Festival – which in 2007 was the largest ever – has been hit by what they’re describing as a “bootleg” DVD, currently on sale around Brighton. They say they’re pissed off about it because they’re doing their own DVD later in the autumn, to raise money for the Pride charities, with the help of Absolute Brighton TV. Mind you, it’s not exactly an act of piracy, just unofficial really – and oddly, the Pride organisation themselves sent out this photo of the sleeve. Hmm, something smells fishy...

Maccabees Promise Secret Gig

In an exclusive interview with SOURCE for our annual Brighton Guide (out now), Maccabees guitarist Felix promised us a secret Brighton gig. He’d been challenged by Toby J on the band’s lack of a Brighton show on their UK tour this month, and responded by promising to organise something really special before the end of the year. The new Brighton Music Scene website launches this month, with a show on Thurs 25th October at Concorde 2. The site is aimed at supporting the local music community with band profiles, venue information, label news and a full live calendar. They’re got four stalwart indie bands at the show: Rubylux, Kovak, The Grams and The Lanes. They’re running two coursees: Music Production and Multimedia Magazine Journalism, both in partnership with Nacro E2E, who will support all the learners to improve their basic skills. Fallen Out Of The Loop

After a largely positive first outing, the inaugral Loop Festival was brought to a standstill during Fujiya & Miyagi’s headline set, when an idiot punter climbed up into the rafters of the marquee and then – in true cliched anti-drug advert style – managed to fall 30ft to the ground in front of everyone. Witnesses claim he shouted “I can fly!”, before sustaining leg and back injuries. Security cut short the encore and cleared the tent, to allow the emergency services in. Our own Kendall was onstage at the time, compering the night and says, “It’s a huge shame that he put what was such a good natured festival in jeopardy for the future, but at least he was able to walk out of hospital a few hours later and is, apparently, sorry for what he did.” The council are reportedly happy with how the affair was handled.

Zap Goes Digital

Well, it’s been a crazy couple years for our favourite salty-aired superclub. After being Zap, then Union, then Zap again, the business has been sold to the kings of Geordie clubland Digital, who’ve lit up Newcastle with their enormously successful venue since 2005. As well as great line ups, the northern version has become known for doing it properly – Function 1 soundsystem, great lighting system, and a DJ booth that NASA would be proud of. It got them voted the 15th best club in the world (by DJs) and third best in the UK (by punters). We can expect the same quality here but they’re so busy rebuilding it that they forgot to get us the info. We’ll tell you more next month then (edit - we've been now, it's ace).

The awards were announced at snazzy Knightsbridge restaurant Mocoto and they acknowledge the blend of cutting-edge innovation and exceptional business drive, both of which Palmer has in spades. His company has invented an amazing new material that looks like rubber – all bendy and stuff – but kicks into action as a shock absorber if it gets hit. Stood outside the windmill for our cover shoot early last year Bat For Lashes was trying to blag our editor’s gloves. “If you win the Mercury Prize you can have them,” he said. Well, now it looks like he might have to give them over. She more than deserves her nomination for her sexy as hell, stunning debut LP, Fur & Gold. In fact she’s surely worth a flutter, up against the likes of The View, Patrick Wolf, New Young Pony Club. William Hill have got her down at 12/1 and we reckon that’s good odds.

JFB is the UK’s best DJ, like, ever

At a sold out Shepherds Bush Empire, local hero JFB was unanimously crowned the best DJ in Britain, winning the UK DJ Championship 2007. He was the only contestant to get the crowd dancing with an insanely intense six-minute set. After winning, we’re told he got drunk and took a model home. A smart night’s work all round. This takes JFB through to the World DMC final at the O2 Dome in October.
